Area Information

Minakami is a four season hot spring resort town in the northern region of Gunma Prefecture, nestled in the Tanigawa range of mountains, just a 70 minute bullet train ride from Tokyo.

Traditionally Minakami has been famous for its incredible natural scenery, hot Springs and traditional crafts, but over the past decade outdoor adventure activities have become a major part of Minakami’s attractions.

The area boasts 2 national parks including the Joshinetsu National Park, Japan's second largest in area. The awesome Tanigawa Range creates an impressive backdrop for the town and also hosts 2 of the 10 ski areas that dominate in the Winter season.

The hot springs in Minakami are not only well known within Japan but also internationaly. The famous Takaragawa Onsen (hot spring) was voted the No1 hot spring in Japan by international travellers, and for good reason, it boasts the largest outdoor hot pools in Japan, surrounded by traditional Japanese architecture and native bush, all prtected in a hidden mountain valley.
